Securing wireless

Defense Department Directive 8100.2 offers guidance on minimum security and encryption standards for wireless devices used at DOD facilities.

Some of the highlights of the policy include:

Encryption of unclassified data for transmission to and from wireless devices is required.

Wireless devices will not be used for storing, processing or transmitting classified information without written approval of a designated authority.

Cellular and/or other radio frequency or infrared wireless devices will not be allowed without written approval into an area in which classified information is discussed or processed.

DOD components will actively screen for wireless devices. Active electromagnetic sensing at DOD or contractor premises to detect and prevent unauthorized access to DOD information systems will be periodically performed.
