Federal 100: John Grimes

John Grimes
Former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration/Defense Department Chief Information Officer
Army Department

As a last hurrah before retiring in June 2009, Grimes helped forge numerous partnerships across the government and industry to deal with cyber threats to critical information systems.

Working under the purview of the Obama administration’s Comprehensive National Cyber Security initiative, Grimes brought together the Defense Department, intelligence community and National Institute for Standards and Technology to develop new guidelines for security controls. This work represents an important step toward developing government processes for information assurance certification and accreditation.

Grimes also championed a cyber threat sharing network among defense contractors, laying the foundation for similar initiatives in other critical infrastructure sectors.

“His involvement in the [CNCS] initiative strengthened the information security posture of the nation,” said Dave Wennergren, deputy chief information officer at the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
