VA builds its own online job board

While the USAJobs federal jobs board has been struggling, the Veterans Affairs Department is preparing to debut its own online job search website displaying job opportunities at the department.

The VA is getting ready to launch the new “VA for Vets” website, with an online job search board, self-assessment tools, resume builder and military skills translator to help veterans identify jobs that match their skills.

The new website currently has 3.553 jobs listed, all of which appear to be positions with the VA. By comparison, USAJobs currently has about 12,000 job opportunities across many agencies.

The official VA for Vets launch is scheduled for Nov. 11, and the website is operating in pilot status until that time, according to a bulletin posted on the website. “At this time, access and services are limited due to continued site testing,” the notice states.

"As part of the VA’s commitment to hiring and retaining Veteran employees—and in support of the President’s pledge to bring more Veterans into civil service—I am pleased to introduce our new career support program: VA for Vets," VA Secretary Eric Shinseki wrote in an introduction to the new website.

The military skills translator on the site asks users to submit the service, pay level and military job title they held.

The VA recently announced that its “Blue Button” personal health record application would add job information, including tips on how military skills translate to civilian jobs.

Typical VA. Use limited tax payer dollars to duplicate a job search web-site instead of putting the dollars into quality health care and benefits. Most likely another way for VA administrative super grade managers to keep thier jobs.

To all those that have served our country, and for those that have worked so hard on the VA for Vets Program I would like to say thank you. This article is basically a half truth. Yes it is a jobs portal but a more accurate article about the website and what it does appeared under the headline VA Call Center comes to Dumfries http://bit.ly/uzALoM As this website is so much more than an online job portal if the author and some of those commenting would just watch the video to learn what this website and program provides to families, care givers, and job seekers alike. It is a new start and brings valuable support tools with coaching and online support to help get our homeless vets working and productive - it speaks more to retention and reintegration but that fact was't even covered. I would have hoped the author would spend more than a few momements on the learing about the website features and the program behind it instead of using it as a backdrop to the USAJOBS.gov re launch issues. Kudos to VA leadership for the vision and determination to bring this website live today and to have the strength and conviction to transform how the agency engages and serves our veterans. I would have expected more from FCW.

Situation normal- everyone has to roll their own. There are dozens of duplicative federal web sites and datsbases for all sorts of functions, and they would indeed be low-hanging fruit for budget cutting. It'll never happen.

Perhaps every government department should have it's own job site so that it would be incredibly difficult to locate a job. Each site could have a link to all of the other sites so that you would have to apply to each site individually.... In all seriousness, the Budget Deficit Committee should look into the money wasted when nearly identical projects are done in deparmental silo's.

The USA jobs already has a way of filtering results, such as results for federal employees vs non-fedreal employees, so it should not have been difficult to implement. It could have been a nice cost-saving measure for the VA and taxpayers. I don't understand why fed agencies consistently have their own job sites; it makes much more sense to keep everything in one place...
