Can State maintain a virtual embassy in Syria?

The State Department closed its embassy in Syria due to rising violence, but a lack of physical presence doesn't necessarily sever diplomatic ties.

State officials might be able to connect with Syrians via the department's websites and social media presences, such as Facebook and Twitter, Nextgov reports. Although State officials have not confirmed a specific virtual-embassy plan, the department has tried it in other countries, including Iran.
