Who are the 1,000 highest paid federal employees?

Out in the commercial world, the rhetoric of the Occupy Wall Street movement has gained some traction: The terms "the 99 percent" and "the 1 percent" are understood by nearly everyone.

So who are the 1 percent in government? An Internet start-up called WikiOrgCharts has just released a list of the 1,000 highest-paid federal employees. No doubt, the list will add fuel to the fire in the argument over whether feds are overpaid. Those who say they are can truthfully point to a few federal employees who earn upward of $300,000 per year, while defenders of federal employees can point out that the highly paid feds are doctors, executives and other professionals who are highly paid in the private sector as well.

In fact, the first 30 names on the list -- the highest paid of the top 1,000 -- are mostly medical officers working for the National Institutes of Health or the Indian Health Service, as are many of the lower ranked people. The first position not tied to health care in some way is Robert Fenner, a general attorney with the National Credit Union Administration, who ranks 60th with an annual salary of $265,559.

the highest paid government employee is not president obama. The coach of the air force football team (troy calhoun) makes around $900,000 a year and is paid by the department of defense. He makes more than double what the POTUS makes.

People speak of 1000 high paid federal employees they feel are over paid. What about the masses of federal employees that are paid close to minimum wage. Most are paid between $15K to under $50K a year that has been working for the government 20 to 30 yrs. Quite a few are senior citizens and can't even afford to retire. People need to get their facts straight. Federal workers have to prove themselves so hard to get very little in return, then to be verbally abused and disrespected by outsiders. We get the blame for what the greedy get away with.

You need to also understand these are pay series only, not job titles. Most of the FDA employees listed here (not me) are Office Directors (supervise 300-400 people), Division Directors (supervise 100+), etc, not just Medical Officers that you would see in a clinic. And they are supervising other MD's, Phds. etc. Misleading in that regard. I also agree most could make way more in clinical practice than this.

I'd like to see a list of how many contractors make over $300K per year. I suspect it's significantly more than 1,000
