Determina offers free protection; Utah increases security with iPolicy

Determina offers free protection
Determina is offering free software to protect computer users from new vulnerabilities found in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Web browser.

Officials at Determina, maker of host-based intrusion-prevention software, said the company will offer its Vulnerability Protection Suite (VPS) Shield for downloading from its Web site. Users can install the software directly onto an affected system without causing any changes in Microsoft Windows files, configuration or functionality, company officials said.

Determina said users who install VPS are protected from the latest IE vulnerabilities that could allow remote attackers to hijack an infected system to execute malicious code or install spyware. The latest vulnerability, reported last month, exists in the Internet Explorer WebViewFolderIcon Active X control. No patch is yet available to correct the problem, Determina officials said. Once a patch is available and installed on a system, Determina VPS will automatically detect the patch and no longer apply the shield, officials said.

Utah increases security with iPolicy
Utah’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is using iPolicy Networks intrusion-detection and prevention and firewall technology to enhance computer security.

The iPolicy software reduces the time the department’s administrators spend detecting network attacks. It also strengthens the network against emerging threats and protects customer information, operational data and employee records, iPolicy officials said.

The department is responsible for all liquor licensing, distribution and sales in the state. It operates 104 point-of-sale terminals at 37 retail stores.

Before installing iPolicy’s technology, officials enforced security through the state’s firewall, which protects all state agency networks. However, officials in the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control wanted more safeguards to ensure a higher level of threat prevention, iPolicy officials said.
