Federal 100 winner: Dr. S. Ward Casscells

Dr. S. Ward Casscells

Assistant secretary for Health Affairs

Defense Department

Casscells introduced a new communications strategy for the Military Health System that uses Web 2.0 technologies to improve patient outcomes, family connections and agency performance.

Thanks to Casscells’ leadership in bringing new technologies to MHS, wounded service members can communicate directly with peers and caregivers in a secure environment using video, interactive forums, blogs and Really Simple Syndication feeds.

“Candidly, [because] he is the assistant secretary of Defense and the chief medical doctor for MHS, we expect [Casscells] to drive innovation,” said Ellen Embrey, acting principal deputy assistant secretary of Defense for health affairs. “Beyond that duty requirement, however, Dr. Casscells internalized the vision for improved communication, extending it to his own behavior.”
