Shane Sanders: Demystifying classified information sharing

Name: Shane L. Sanders

Age: 34

Organization: Army Technology Applications Office

Title: ASEP Network Operations Manager

Nominated for: Potentially groundbreaking work that could enable Army officials to manage and share classified information through an enterprisewide area network. Sanders has developed an approach that should make it feasible for one network to handle two types of top-secret information: sensitive compartmented and special access required. Moreover, he demonstrated that such a system is possible using existing technology.

First IT mentor: Sean Smith, a fellow E-4 with whom I served while on active duty with the Army. Sean opened the doors to the world of IT when he taught me my first lessons in programming and Web development. I took off running and never looked back.

Latest accomplishment on the job: Completion of several white papers detailing the challenges of processing SAP and SCI within a single security domain. The solutions presented within the papers would result in significant cost savings to the [Defense Department] while increasing information-sharing capabilities among the services.

Career highlight: Serving as a member of a multiservice team tasked to conduct the security test and evaluation of a major information system based on cutting-edge technologies that currently support numerous organizations throughout DOD.

Favorite job-related bookmark: Bruce Schneier’s blog, “Schneier on Security".

Favorite app: ESPN Radio app for the iPhone –- great when stuck in D.C. traffic.

Dream non-IT-related job: Owner/brewmaster of my own craft beer somewhere in the mountains of southern Colorado.
