CIO Council offers social media privacy advice

What: A new report from the CIO Council offers detailed advice on how federal agencies can make the best use of social media to get out their messages and share information with stakeholders. It also, as the title implies, pulls together best practices to guide decision-makers who have to develop and implement social media policies.
Why: Providing employees, citizens and other government entities with information is a prime function of federal agencies. The growing use of social media demands that government engage people where they live, while maintaining a level of security and protecting proprietary information. "Privacy Best Practices for Social Media" provides guidance on both scores.
Verbatim: "Before implementing any use of social media, an agency needs to understand its mission, and how different uses of social media can advance that mission. There are various ways agencies within the Federal Government can use social media in order to more effectively fulfill their mission. Each different use of social media raises different considerations and requires different operational policies, privacy documentation, and notices to the public."
