Texas Department Selects Logicon for $80 Million Outsourcing Pact

The Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services (PRS) has awarded Logicon Inc. a six-year contract worth up to $80 million to manage its desktop computing environment.

The contract must gain final approval from the Department of Health and Human Services, but that process is expected to be complete by week's end, said Bowden Hight, deputy director for information technology at PRS.

PRS' 6,000 employees are responsible for protecting the physical and emotional well-being of Texas citizens, paying specific attention to the state's children, elderly or disabled adults living at home or in state facilities. The department also licenses day care facilities and registered family homes.

Herndon, Va.-based Logicon will assume responsibility for managing and supporting the majority of the department's data systems and networks. The deal includes desktop and laptop upgrades and replacements, network monitoring, help desk services, disaster recovery and other IT-related services.

"Our old contract expired Aug. 31, and we decided the way to guarantee the best value for the state was to go out competitive," Hight said.

Logicon representatives currently are on-site in Texas but are waiting for federal approval before moving forward with "nuts-and-bolts installation," Hight said.
