Tera buys supercomputer line

Tera Computer Co., the Seattle-based supercomputer company, announced

last week it is acquiring the Cray supercomputer business unit from Silicon

Graphics Inc. for an undisclosed price.

Under the terms of the sale, which must be completed within 60 days,

Tera will acquire SGI's Cray supercomputer product line.

Tera president Jim Rottsolk said the purchase will give the company

"the world's foremost supercomputing technology, R&D manufacturing,

sales and service capabilities.

Cray, which makes some of the fastest supercomputers

in the world, has substantial business with federal agencies, including

the Defense Department, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

and NASA.

Changing of the guard

On the industry side of the federal IT scene, Gary Newgaard, vice president

of sales and marketing at Compaq Computer Corp.'s federal division, announced

last week he would resign effective March 10. Newgaard has been with Compaq

for 15 years. Those close to Newgaard said he was in negotiations with several

companies and had not decided where he will be going.

Feds, telecom vendors to team

The Commerce Department last week announced the Wireless Innovations

in Communications Initiative, a plan to bring together federal and private-

sector communications managers to discuss how the latest wireless technology

could be applied to solve federal telecommunications requirements.

The effort will expose agencies to the latest technologies and allow

the Clinton administration to promote new products and services. The program

will review various wireless technologies, including mobile technologies,

radar, navigation technologies and satellites.
