Beyond.com on the block

After filing for bankruptcy protection last month, Beyond.com Corp. said that a bid to sell its government software reseller business, which holds numerous federal contracts, had fallen through due to undisclosed issues related to the potential sale. The company plans to meet all of its contractual obligations to federal customers while it seeks a new buyer for the business, a Beyond.com spokesman said.

Beyond.com filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Jan. 25 after efforts to raise capital to pay debts were unsuccessful. The company also announced at the time that it had agreed to sell the assets and contracts of its two main business units — the online eStores business and the Government Systems Group — to Digital River Inc., an e-commerce provider.

However, on Feb. 11 the companies announced that Beyond.com's government unit would not be included in the pending sale due to unmet "closing conditions," the Beyond.com spokesman said.

Beyond.com's government unit resells software licenses to agencies and enables them to distribute, manage and track the licenses across the Internet to multiple locations.
