Navy forms first XML council

The Navy Department has formed a council to help guide the service in applying the Extensible Markup Language policy released last year, David Wennergren, the Navy's chief information officer, announced March 10.

This week, he will lead activities to help kick off the new XML Business Standards Council, the first of four groups that will form the working-level tier of the Navy's XML governance structure.

The council will focus on XML business standards, which promote the use of common data elements and objects that facilitate information exchange among systems. It will coordinate XML component usage within and across functional areas, as well as among the Navy, other Defense Department entities and federal agencies.

DISA releases bandwidth expansion RFP

The Defense Information Systems Agency has issued a request for proposals (RFP) that will kick off the next phase of a project aimed at boosting the amount of high-speed bandwidth available to the military and intelligence communities.

The Global Information Grid bandwidth expansion is a cornerstone of the Defense Department chief information officer's vision for network-centric operations, in which data is posted on networks and made available departmentwide.

The RFP, which DISA issued March 7, includes specifications for equipment and fiber to bring the enhanced bandwidth to 92 approved locations worldwide.

Contractors have until April 8 to submit proposals. Awards are expected before the end of this fiscal year, according to DISA officials.
