Other tips for virtualization success

Experts offer the following tips for getting the most out of server virtualization.

  • Information technology managers for the Fulton County, Ga., government require their employees to rebuild servers before virtualizing them to uncover and eliminate obsolete, resource-sapping applications.

  • They also require that everyone on the IT staff virtualize a server to make sure they understand the technology and are comfortable using it to run the organization’s systems.

  • Training in the technical aspects of virtualization is important, but IT departments shouldn’t rely on potentially biased, vendor-supplied instruction, said Philip Dawson, a research vice president at Gartner.

  • As a security precaution, IT officials in Gaston County, N.C., created separate virtual environments for internal applications and public-facing programs. By doing so, county officials hope to avoid unauthorized intrusions into their internal systems.
