Federal 100 winner: Rear Adm. Michael Brown
Rear Adm. Michael Brown
Acting assistant secretary for cybersecurity and communications
Homeland Security Department
Brown brought a personal touch when building the teams that are entrusted with securing the government’s most critical networks and emergency communications systems. He led the implementation of the Trusted Internet Connections program, which reduced the number of Internet gateways in government from thousands to about 100. He provided guidance and direction to the National Communications System, the National Cyber Security Division and the Office of Emergency Communications.
“Michael Brown brought to the table a direct, hands-on approach, the willingness to reach out to the private sector, and a personal interest in the recruitment, hiring and retention of the cyber workforce,” said Robert Carey, the Navy Department's chief information officer.
