Nick Saund: Setting a guard post for military health information

Name: Narinder “Nick” Saund (pronounced Sawnd)

Age: 29

Organization: Defense Health Services Systems in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs' Program Office of the Tricare Management Activity

Title: Chief Information Technology Officer

Nominated for: Raising the security and performance of applications fielded by the DHSS program. Saund, for example, strengthened the protection of sensitive data stored in DHSS applications by quickly developing a single-sign-on system based on the Common Access Card. He also worked with officials at the Defense Information Systems Agency to ensure the quality of support for DHSS systems.

First IT mentor: No individual IT mentor, but I developed my natural affinity for information technology at River Hill High School, an award-winning technical magnet school in Howard County, Md., where I completed my first development project in the 9th grade and have been fascinated with IT ever since. It’s challenging and gives me the ability to be creative.

Latest accomplishments on the job:

  • Implementing disciplined, agile engineering approaches in the design, development, budgeting and achievement of enterprise information technology solutions.
  • Delivering two-factor authentication cybersecurity improvements to meet government mandates for strong protection of sensitive data stored in DHSS applications through rapid implementation of Identity Authentication Services, Information Exchange Platform services and single-sign-on Common Access Card enforcement within DHSS.
  • Improving relationships with other federal partners to ensure that DHSS applications hosted outside [the Military Health System] receive the best technical support available.

Career highlight: Worked as lead systems engineer in the implementation of the Military Health System’s enterprise health care portal, Tricare Online, where we built a highly available and scalable architecture in support of the more than 9.6 million beneficiaries.
