Modern systems will operate in evolving and unknown environments. To achieve agencies’ objectives, human workers will interact synergistically with artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. The “behavior” of such integrated systems will emerge as a function of operational context, AI/ML techniques and complex interactions among multiple components. This presentation will use systems engineering to explore the emergent behavior of systems from the perspective of holistic system design and evaluation techniques as a means of recognizing and characterizing emergent behavior.
