Blockchain may be best known as the underpinning of bitcoin, but federal innovators increasingly looking to the distributed ledger technology for efficient and secure solutions across a variety of mission needs.

With possibilities that extend far beyond cryptocurrency, the General Services Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services have active pilot programs to explore blockchain’s uses in the federal government. HHS, for example, already is using blockchain to streamline the acquisitions process. Other agencies are assessing. how distributed ledgers can be used in everything from financial and contract management to medical records-keeping and maintaining federal workforce data.
