The work: Developing innovative IT programs to expedite hazardous waste cleanup at nuclear weapons sites and reduce the risks associated with those activities.

The impact: Beard’s IT solutions help make hazardous wastelands safe, transforming them into parks and museums and protecting watersheds and aquifers.

The nuts and bolts: Beard directs advanced IT programs to meet ambitious goals to close the most radioactive sites in North America. In 2011, her group saved millions of dollars and improved safety and reliability by using radio frequency identification to track waste transfers at one site and state-of-the-art wireless technology to consolidate data centers at another site.
