The work: Overseeing one of the largest desktop virtualization efforts at the Defense Department, involving more than 50,000 users spread across 200 countries.

The impact: The Next Generation Desktop Environment has created a more manageable IT environment, making it easier for DIA’s centralized staff to keep systems up-to-date and running smoothly.

Nuts and bolts: Mestrovich’s disciplined approach has helped DIA avoid many of the problems that typically derail large desktop modernization efforts. Among other things, he planned the launch to avoid disrupting daily work as much as possible and traveled to many remote sites to check on progress.
