Social Security's legal department is shopping for a computer system to better manage its caseload

The Social Security Administration's legal department—already wrestling with a heavy workload and anticipating that things will only get worse in coming years—is shopping for a computer system to better manage its caseload.

The agency's Office of the General Counsel is looking for vendors who can supply it with a commercial off-the-shelf national docketing and management information system.

The office, which provides legal advice to Social Security on program litigation involving benefit claims and other matters, wants a system that is accessible to more than 500 users throughout its 12 locations—from its Baltimore headquarters and an "answer unit" in Virginia to 10 regional offices across the country.

According to the agency's description of its needs, published March 16 in Commerce Business Daily, the program will have to handle a pending workload of more than 20,000 open cases and more than 15,000 new cases every year.
