The Department of Veterans Affairs now has a second option for buying Sun Microsystems Inc. products through the agency's mandatory procurement vehicle for computer hardware and software.

MPC Computers LLC, one of four prime contractors on the VA's Procurement of Computer Hardware and Software 2 contract, reached an agreement with subcontractor Paragon Systems LLC, to offer a full range of Sun systems to the VA.

Previously, the agency's offices could buy Sun products only through a single prime contractor, GTSI Corp. MPC's arrangement with Paragon is designed to give the department a choice of vendors.

"Agencies realize significantly better terms and conditions when their procurement vehicles perpetuate competition beyond contract award," said Paragon President Gary Newgaard.

MPC, formerly MicronPC, has served the VA for more than seven years on the contract. Aside from MPC and GTSI, the other prime contractors are Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Compaq and Dell Computer Corp.'s Computer Solution's provider, PlanetGov.
