Energy awards Oak Ridge management contract to incumbent
UT-Battelle gets a five-year, $6.3 billion contract extension for continued operation and management of the laboratory.
The Energy Department awarded a five-year, $6.3 billion contract extension to UT-Battelle for continued operation and management of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., according to a Dec. 1 DOE press release.
UT-Battelle is a nonprofit limited partnership between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute, a research and development firm based in Columbus, Ohio. The partnership was established in 1999 to manage the lab. The extension was signed this fall and will run through March 31, 2010.
The lab, which supports the department’s missions, has six major scientific competencies, including advanced materials, complex biological systems, energy, high-performance computing, national security and neutron science, according to the release.
Next year, the lab will complete the development of a $1.4 billion Spallation Neutron Source, an accelerator-based science facility, and will provide neutron beams 10 times more intense than any other source in the world, according to a lab fact sheet. Six DOE national laboratories are collaborating on the project, but the lab will house and maintain the facility.
Last year, DOE also awarded the laboratory $25 million to develop the world’s most powerful supercomputer.
