New Jersey Online Air General Permits

Given the reams of paperwork, complex regulations and extensive reviews, obtaining an environmental permit from the New Jersey Department of EnvironmentalProtection can take months or years. But the department's new Web page hasreduced the time to register for certain general permits to less than fiveminutes in some cases.

The site (www.state.nj.us/dep) integrates online permit registrationand payment with the department's environmental management system, providingan easy-to-use permit process accessible to anyone with a Java- compatiblebrowser and a valid credit card. That process is made possible by a changein the department's procedures: Standardized permits have been pre-approvedby the department and the New Jersey public. With pre-approved permits, qualifying facilities can opt out of the lengthy custom permit process andsimply register and pay online.

The new process enables the department to shift resources from paperworkto compliance assistance and monitoring. Officials anticipate that thesite will generate up to $600,000 in permit fees per year.
