Army Maj. Gen. Paul J. Kern has been nominated for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general and the assignment as military deputy director of the Army Acquisition Corps Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Research Development and Acquisition) Washington D.C. Since June 1996 Kern has served as the commanding general 4th Infantry Division (mechanized) Fort Hood Texas.
Brig. Gen. (sel.) Teddie McFarland next month will become vice commander of the Air Force Electronic Systems Center Hanscom Air Force Base Mass. McFarland replaces Brig. Gen. Wilbert Pearson who will become the director of operations at the Air Force Materiel Command Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Ohio.McFarland previously served in the Pentagon as deputy director for air warfare in the Office of Strategic and Tactical Systems Office of the Undersecretary of Defense and Acquisition. He entered active duty from the Air Force Academy with his first operational assignment flying F4 Phantoms with the 92nd Tactical Squadron in England.McFarland has commanded two flight-test squadrons and before his Pentagon tour commanded the prestigious 412th Test Wing Edwards Air Force Base Calif. McFarland is a command pilot with more than 3 000 flying hours on T-38 F4 A-10 and F-16 aircraft.
J. Greg Hanson former chief software engineer at the Air Force has been appointed the chief technology officer of Telos Corp. an Ashburn Va. systems integrator. At the Air Force Hanson was responsible for the Air Force's global software policy and its Year 2000 program. Hanson also has served as the lead computer scientist at NATO's Central Region Headquarters.
Roger Thompson has joined the National Computer Security Association as director of anti-virus research. Thompson was director of anti-virus research at On Technology which bought Thompson's company Thompson Network Software last year. NCSA which was founded in 1989 provides independent product certification and disseminates security information to corporations and government agencies.
Lewis Platt president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard Co. was elected chairman of the Computer Systems Policy Project a group of CEOs who advocate public-policy positions on critical trade and technology issues. Platt will replace Robert Palmer the president and CEO of Digital Equipment Corp. and will begin his duties Aug. 1.***
