ESRI Equips City of Long Beach, Calif., With GIS

Redlands, Calif.-based Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc. (ESRI) has provided the city of Long Beach, Calif., with an enterprisewide geographic information system that will enable new applications and provide interfaces to the city's central management office, fire department, gas department and other public-works agencies.

Data has typically been kept in about 40 databases maintained separately by Long Beach agencies. Although the project was started in 1994, it is now undergoing a critical planning phase in which the city is considering expanding GIS hardware and related equipment in efforts to provide Internet access to the system.
