WorldCom bids for MCI

WorldCom Inc. last week offered to purchase MCI Communications Corp. for $30 billion in stock in a bid to thwart British Telecommunications PLC's plan to buy MCI.

MCI had federal IT revenue of $500 million in 1996. The company's federal contracts include the U.S. Postal Service's Management Network Services the Defense Department's Defense Information Systems Network Switched and Bandwidth Manager Services and the Federal Aviation Administration's FAA Telecommunications Satellite and Leased Interfacility National Air Space Communications System Very High-Speed Backbone Network Service pacts.

HP offers leasing on GSA schedule

Hewlett-Packard Co. last week announced the availability of leasing as an option on its General Services Administration schedule contract.

HP Technology Finance has been approved to offer operating lease terms and conditions through the schedule. In an operating lease the customer returns the equipment to the supplier when the lease term expires. Lease terms typically run 36 months or less according to HP.

HP's leasing program extends to its Tactical Advanced Computer-Joint Workstation blanket purchase agreement with the Navy. HP also offers leasing through its Scientific and Engineering Workstation Procurement II contract.

Ingram Micro Iomega target feds

Ingram Micro Inc. will distribute Iomega Corp.'s line of PC storage solutions to federal state and local governments under a newly expanded distribution pact.

The arrangement announced last week is part of Ingram Micro's Partnership America program which assists government resellers and integrators. Since 1995 Ingram Micro's Government Division has signed on 225 government resellers and integrators. Iomega's pact with Ingram Micro covers products including Iomega's Zip Jaz and Ditto drives.

Goldberg joins Pulsar Data Systems

David C. Goldberg has been appointed vice president of operations at Pulsar Data Systems Inc.'s Technology Sciences Division. Goldberg most recently was a branch manager at OmniData Corp. a value-added reseller. Goldberg has also held management and technical positions at GTE Corp.'s Data Systems Services Division TRW Inc. Unisys Corp. and Honeywell.

Vion to offer enhanced Hitachi models

Vion Corp. last week said it will offer Hitachi Data Systems Pilot P7 models with new logical partitioning features early next year.

Vion which sells Hitachi mainframes on the GSA schedule said Hitachi plans several new features for Pilot P7 machines in the first quarter of 1998. Those features include the ability to run 15 logical partitions with a single input/output configuration data set.

Other features include enhanced dynamic storage reconfiguration as well as an internal coupling facility.

A spokeswoman for Vion said the enhanced models will be placed on Vion's GSA schedule as soon as they are commercially available.

AF awards $5 million pact for forms

The Air Force last week awarded BTG Inc. a $5 million contract to provide forms automation software from JetForm Corp. to all its PC users worldwide. The pact is the largest licensing agreement to date for JetForm which will also provide training and support services.

The deal expands the existing JetForm installation with the Air Force and includes an upgrade to the latest version of the company's FormFlow software.
