President Clinton has nominated Army Maj. Gen. James King to be director of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency. The president also nominated King for a promotion to lieutenant general. King now serves as acting director of NIMA.

Thomas McSweeny has been named associate administrator for regulation and certification at the Federal Aviation Administration. McSweeny, who previously served as director of the FAA's Aircraft Certification Service, replaces Guy Gardner, who is leaving government.

Nichols Research Corp. has expanded its presence in the Washington, D.C., area with additional leadership. Michael Solley, previously president of Nichols' Government Information Technology Business Segment, has been promoted to executive vice president. The company also announced last week that retired Army Brig. Gen. John Rose has joined as president of Nichols' Army business operations.

America Online Inc. announced last week that retired Gen. Colin Powell, chairman of America's Promise and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Franklin Raines, chairman and CEO-designate of the Federal National Mortgage Association and former director of the Office of Management and Budget, have been elected to its board of directors.

ANSTEC Inc. last month appointed Powell Benedict as chief technology officer and director of the company's Technology Resource Center. Benedict comes to the company from DynCorp, where he served as director of systems integration and principal software engineer. The company also appointed George Futch and John MacDonald as directors of business development. Futch previously held a similar position at SETA Corp., and MacDonald previously performed the same job for Litton/PRC Inc.
