The National Science Foundation has named University of Pennsylvania computer science and engineering professor Ruzena Bajcsy assistant director for NSF's Information Science and Engineering Directorate. Bajcsy will assume her new position in December; she is replacing Juris Hartmanis, whose term expired.

House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas) this month presented the 1998 Excellence in Programmatic Oversight Award to Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), chairman of the House Science Committee. Sensenbrenner was cited for his oversight of such federal efforts as NASA's space program and the Next Generation Internet program.

Ellen Glover was appointed president of Advanced Technology Systems Inc. this month. Glover previously served as the company's chief operating officer. ATS also appointed two new group vice presidents, Leon Perry and Peter Spewak, to manage daily operations.

Peter Gist, director of financial services at the Treasury Department's Financial Management Service, this month accepted a 1998 Alexander Hamilton Award on behalf of the agency for its work on the Fedtax II system.
