NASPO honors innovative procurement programs

The National Association of State Procurement Officials honored innovative state procurement programs in Ohio, Texas and New York with its Cronin Club Innovation Awards earlier this month.

Winning the Gold Award was Ohio's Natural Gas Purchasing program, which enables buyers to use private-sector price flexibility, bill verification, electronic billing and administrative incentives in natural gas contracts, resulting in lower gas prices for the state.

Texas' Vendor Relations program, which uses vendor training, counseling, outreach and problem resolution to improve communications between vendors and state purchasers, took the Silver Award. New York's Telecommunications Services project won the Bronze Award for its efforts to revamp the state's telecommunications contracting process, saving the state more than $35 million to date.

The Cronin Club Innovation Awards are named for the first NASPO president, George Cronin. The 1999 winners were chosen from a field of 16 nominees representing 12 states. More information is available at www.naspo.org.
