Lura Powell, director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Advanced Technology Program, last week said she will take advantage of an early retirement option to retire from the federal government Sept. 30. Powell has been at NIST since 1972 and became the ATP director in 1995. Cita Furlani, chief of the ATP Information Technology Office and acting ATP deputy director, will serve as acting director until a permanent director is named.***John Moore, a computer scientist for the Treasury Department's Financial Management Service, last month received an Industry Achievement award from The Smart Card Forum for his work in the government and technology sectors. Moore also is chairman of the Federal Smart Card Users Group.***House Science Committee chairman Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) last month received a Champion of Science award from the Science Coalition for his support for federal funding of basic scientific research. The Science Coalition is an alliance of 416 organizations, institutions and individuals working to sustain the government's commitment to university-based scientific research.***The House Science Committee recently announced several appointments. Eric Sterner is now part of the full committee oversight staff after serving as professional staff member on the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee. Sterner will continue to focus on oversight of space issues. Anne Dressendorfer Binsted recently became the committee's editor, after serving as special assistant to the chief of staff. Binsted will take over the duties of the former Government Printing Office detailee. Sarah Monahan is now special assistant to the chief of staff, replacing Binsted.***Harold Klink, a former sales and marketing executive at CACI International Inc., recently joined SI International as vice president of sales. Klink spent the past two years at CACI, where he led a sales team that closed more than $95 million in task-order bookings. Klink also is a member of the Federal Government Information Processing Council.
