Help is on the way
Agencies that have had a hard time having orders filled by reseller
Inacom Corp. may be relieved to know the firm last week completed the sale
of its customization and logistic operations to Compaq Computer Corp.
Distributors had put Inacom on a credit hold until the deal was completed,
making it difficult for the company to fill orders. But the sale to Compaq,
worth $370 million, allows Compaq to take control of Inacom's PC distribution
and form a new subsidiary called Custom Edge.
The more than 2,500 Inacom employees affected by the sale will retain
their jobs. The sale should not affect Inacom supply contracts or service
agreements.
IT Confessions
Many information technology managers seem proud of the fact that they
have little experience in the field.
The latest person to confess is former White House press secretary Mike
McCurry. He told a group gathered at the National Press Club for the unveiling
of Grassroots.com, a Web site designed to foster political action: "I have
to confess that the whole time I was at the White House, I didn't once sign
on to the White House Web site. I didn't know how."
At the same press conference, John Sununu, the former governor of New
Hampshire and chief of staff during the Bush administration, said, "I'm
an old Internet user. I was using it when it was called ARPAnet, which means
I used it before Al Gore invented it."
