Infrastructure is defined as the basic facilities and equipment needed for

the performance of a particular function or the resources (such as personnel,

buildings and equipment) required for an activity.

New kinds of infrastructure:

* Digital libraries.

* Shared information and databases.

* Research and education networks.

* Distributed user facilities.

* Standards and protocols.
