BlackBerry earns FIPS nod

Research In Motion Ltd. announced at last week's FOSE trade show that its BlackBerry wireless handheld devices have been awarded the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-1 validation for its embedded encryption technology.

FIPS validation is awarded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which collaborates with national and international standards committees, users, industry groups, consortia, and research and trade organizations to develop federal computer standards. NIST develops standards when there are compelling federal requirements, such as for security and privacy of sensitive information.

FIPS 140-1 provides the security requirements that must be satisfied by a cryptographic module implemented within a security system. The security requirements include design, interfaces, authorized roles and services, physical security, software security, key management and cryptographic algorithms.

Itronix gets reseller deal

Itronix Corp., a manufacturer of ruggedized mobile computers, and CDW-G Inc. today announced an agreement that makes CDW-G a preferred reseller of Itronix products. As part of the agreement, CDW-G will offer Itronix products on its General Services Administration Federal Supply Schedule.

Effective immediately, many Itronix products are available for purchase at GSA pricing through CDW-G's Web site (www.cdwg.com).
