I have worked for the Navy for 31 years; nine of those years I was an active-duty Navy destroyer sailor.

I have worked hundreds of hours of overtime without compensation of any kind. I take the public trust very seriously.

I have always felt that I owe my country and the U.S. Navy a huge debt of gratitude because I have received some of the best training and experience in the world during my career both as a Navy enlisted man and as a Navy civil servant.

I have worked in data communications and system security almost all of those 31 years. I have been maintaining network firewalls and intrusion-detection systems almost single-handedly for this command for more than four years.I go over firewall logs and keep up with intrusion-detection alerts seven days a week, including holidays.

I am not compensated for this extra work. It is not compensation that I seek. I care very much about doing the best job that I can.

What will my reward be?

I will lose my job or my position thanks to the Navy Marine Corps Intranet.And in the meantime, I will have to continually listen to new and old contracting-out initiatives.

Does this discourage me? Only a little.

Ex-destroyer sailors are tough and will continue to do the best job they can, no matter what the rumors are or what is happening all around them.
