DOD uses multimedia search software

The Defense Department will enhance its new Visual Information Management System with multimedia search products from Convera, according to officials at the company.

The system is designed to capture, edit, index, store, search, retrieve, distribute and manage DOD's digital media assets. This includes still images, video, audio, graphics and eventually text documents.

Convera's RetrievalWare search software will be integrated into the system's Web-based, e-commerce portal. Users will then be able to quickly and accurately search for and retrieve visual information from multimedia archives.

DOD has approximately 700 databases that process and manage multimedia assets.

Microsoft, VeriSign join forces

Microsoft Corp. and VeriSign Inc. plan to develop a series of next-generation security solutions.

The public-key infrastructure platform, which will be built on Microsoft's Windows Server 2003 and VeriSign's Managed PKI services, will let organizations deploy and manage secure communications and digital identity systems more easily, according to officials from both companies.

Initial work will focus on using the digital certificate automatic enrollment capabilities in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP to offer strong authentication for remote users.

Additionally, the combined solutions and services will ensure that roaming users can securely access wireless local-area networks.

Later work will focus on interoperability services that will enable organizations to extend secure commerce and communications infrastructures beyond the corporate network.
