NASA fields financial backbone

NASA's Integrated Financial Management Program reached a significant milestone last week with the full implementation of its core financial module.

Under the new system, program managers at each of NASA's 10 field centers will use the same financial tools and have the same access to timely data. "The new system allows us to work with common tools toward common goals, not as 10 different centers with different ways of managing their finances," said NASA program executive Patrick Ciganer. The core financial module is considered the main tool in NASA's $500 million effort to provide an agencywide accounting system. It is the fifth of nine program management modules the agency plans to have in place by 2006.

Joint Forces to roll out NMCI

The Joint Forces Command will sign onto the Navy's enterprise network by fiscal 2005, according to the command's senior information technology official.

Air Force Brig. Gen. Walter Jones, director of command, control, communications and computer systems, said that Joint Forces Command is looking to adopt a central enterprise network approach and the Navy Marine Corps Intranet will provide that capability. Command officials are developing their own enterprise network in an effort to consolidate the networks and applications at the different command locations. That effort is expected to be complete in less than a year. The Pacific Command will be the first unified, multiservice command to transition to NMCI. It is in the assumption-of-responsibility phase, meaning prime contractor EDS has assumed control of its network in anticipation of the transition.
