Forrester Research analysts classify business process management (BPM) vendors into five categories. Here are some examples of companies in each category:

Application integration — Tibco Software, webMethods, SeeBeyond, Vitria Technology, CommerceQuest, HandySoft Global and Appian.

Application platforms — IBM, BEA Systems, Microsoft, Sybase, Sun Microsystems and Integic.

Enterprise business applications — SAP, Oracle, Siebel Systems and Chordiant Software.

Enterprise content management — FileNet, Documentum, Open Text, Interwoven and Vignette.

Pure-play BPM — Savvion, Fuego, Tibco (with the recent purchase of Staffware), PegaSystems, Intalio, Lombardi Software and Metastorm.

Other products — including groupware, collaborative tools and basic workflow tools — may also offer BPM capabilities.
