Flipside: Uncle Sam as a hot employer

Who says young people don’t want to be feds? According to the “ideal employer rankings” by Universum Communications, the company’s survey of 37,000 undergraduate students puts several federal agencies right up there with Google and ahead of Microsoft and Apple Computer.

The students from 207 schools said their career goals are to balance their personal and professional lives (59 percent), pursue further education (46 percent), build a sound financial base (32 percent) and contribute to society (27 percent).

Government/Public Services was the No. 2-ranked industry, right behind health care. The State Department, FBI and CIA, “which up to five years ago hardly appeared in the ideal 100 companies to work for, now hold overall third, fourth and fifth places, and position themselves in the top three in the Liberal Arts Ideal Rankings together with the National Security Agency as No. 6,” according to Universum.

The top 10 ideal employers:

    1. Walt Disney
    2. Google
    3. State Department
    4. FBI
    5. CIA
    6. Microsoft
    7. Apple Computer
