SBA names chief of staff

Small Business Administration Administrator Steven Preston has appointed Joel Szabat chief of staff.

Szabat will be a primary adviser to Preston and the agency's senior managers.

In 2005, Szabat worked as transportation counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. He directed the U.S. government's $544 million transportation reconstruction program in Iraq.

He joined the Transportation Department in 2002 as deputy assistant secretary for transportation policy.

Before joining DOT, Szabat was a consultant on transportation for Republicans in the California State Assembly.

Szabat received a bachelor’s degree in economics and government from Georgetown University in 1981 and a master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1988.
