DataPath buys network management software firm

DataPath, a provider of satellite and wireless communications networks to the Army, the Marine Corps and emergency first responders, has acquired ILC, a privately held provider of network management software for monitoring, controlling and automating hybrid communications networks.

DataPath paid $20.7 million for ILC, not including the $5 million the company paid to cover ILC’s outstanding debt.

The Atlanta-based ILC generated revenue of $12 million in 2005, according to DataPath.

With the acquisition, DataPath said it expects to strengthen its position as a provider of reliable hybrid satellite and wireless communications networks for military, civilian government and commercial customers; expand its customer base; diversify its software business by marketing a single architecture for multiple market segments; accelerate its software development; and improve its research and development of mobile video, IP television and other technologies.

DataPath said ILC’s relationships with the Army, the Navy, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other government agencies will increase its sales opportunities in core military and first-responder markets.

“The addition of ILC’s MaxView network management software and expertise increases our competitiveness and underscores our ongoing commitment to integrating best-of-breed commercial technologies that meet our customers’ rapidly evolving communications needs,” said David Helfgott, president and chief operating officer of DataPath, in a statement.

MaxView software provides full management, control and automation of satellite, broadcast, IP, optical, wireless, audio/video, microwave and other systems from one console. More than 600 MaxView systems are deployed worldwide.

Richard Graham, former chief executive officer of ILC, will remain at DataPath as vice president of corporate planning and operations. Although ILC will be a wholly owned subsidiary, DataPath is integrating the company’s 65 Atlanta-based ILC employees with its Duluth, Ga.-based Software Business Unit.

DataPath has nearly 600 employees worldwide.
