What is the Navy Privacy Team reading?

Steve Muck, a member of Navy Chief Information Officer Robert Carey’s privacy team, offers these recommendations at www.doncio.navy.mil.

1.“U.S. Government Privacy”

By Julie S. McEwen and Dr. Stuart S. Shapiro

Covers privacy principles and terminology, privacy policy implementation, program auditing and compliance, and record management practices.

2. “If You Are Me, Then Who Am I?”

By John P. Gardner Jr., James D. McCartney and Jeffrey M. Omtvedt

Details the good, the bad and the ugly regarding what identity theft products actually accomplish.

3. “Understanding Privacy”

By Daniel J. Solove

The author argues that no single definition can be workable but rather there are multiple forms of privacy related to one another by family resemblances.

4. “The Truth About Identity Theft”

By Jim Stickley

Stickley has stolen credit cards, hacked Social Security numbers, robbed banks and created fake ATMs. He has broken into armed government facilities. Fortunately, he was hired to perform those attacks to find out just how easy it is to commit identity theft.

5. “Stealing Your Life”

By Frank W. Abagnale

Abagnale, depicted in the film “Catch Me If You Can,” exposes the tactics of today’s identity theft criminals and offers powerful strategies to thwart them based on his second career as a fraud-fighting consultant.
