Federal 100: Jonathan Benett

Jonathan Benett

Name: Jonathan Benett
Title: Program Manager for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Food and Nutrition Service
Agency: Department of Agriculture

Fraud's nemesis. Benett completed delivery of the complex and highly visible ALERT system to reduce fraud, and he did it within budget and ahead of schedule. He manages a complex portfolio of IT systems and projects focused on optimizing program integrity and reducing fraud, waste and abuse in SNAP, which helps low-income people get the food their families need. This $86.2 billion program constituted 58 percent of USDA's appropriated budget authority in fiscal 2012. ALERT analyzes nearly 3 billion transactions per year to identify and disqualify fraudulent retailers. Benett's efforts are expected to save taxpayers $330 million a year.
