Last August, the Senate confirmed Dempsey as a member of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, bringing the longtime online privacy advocate into the executive branch, albeit part-time. Dempsey spent a decade on Capitol Hill focused on constitutional and civil rights and since 1995 has championed Internet privacy, government transparency and civil liberties from the nonprofit sector. In 2012, his leadership of the Digital Due Process Coalition helped pave the way for Senate passage of reforms to bring the Electronic Communications Privacy Act into the 21st century. As one industry expert put it, "Jim is always a major privacy player."
