2014 Fed 100

Federal 100: Margie Graves

Name: Margie Graves
Title: Deputy CIO
Agency: Department of Homeland Security

Team first. In her 11-year tenure at DHS, Graves has served in many upper-level IT management jobs. In 2013, she stepped into the acting CIO role after Richard Spires' abrupt departure and kept the office running smoothly for six months until a new leader was brought on. She testified on short notice before unhappy House members, maintained her professionalism even when Capitol Hill staffers mischaracterized her career at DHS and refused all press inquiries unrelated to DHS IT initiatives. In short, Graves put the department's needs ahead of her own interests in the face of intense public scrutiny.
