2014 Fed 100

Federal 100: Michael Simcock

Name: Michael Simcock
Title: Chief Data Architect
Agency: Department of Homeland Security

Data herder. Where one IT manager sees a trunk and another sees big ears, Simcock visualizes the entire data elephant -- and knows how to herd it. In his data architecture and governance role, he keeps track of massive amounts of DHS information, tames it and puts it to work. He supported development of Version 3.0 of the National Information Exchange Model and backed the Digital Government Strategy and Open Data Policy. His admirers say Simcock has a talent for translating esoteric concepts into understandable language and separating IT fads from truly useful technology.
