2019 Fed 100

Federal 100: Sam Mulopulos

Name: Sam Mulopulos
Title: Legislative Assistant, Office of Sen. Rob Portman
Organization: U.S. Senate

Bright IDEA. Mulopulos was interested in the 21st Century Integrated Digital Experience Act, a bill to improve the user experience in government, from its conception. The bill had a champion in the House in Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) but needed a Senate co-sponsor. Mulopulos not only took the bill to his boss, Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), but also convened meetings to hash out the content of the legislation on the front end. “We pre-conferenced the bill,” Mulopulos said. “We got staff in a room and did it.” That advance effort made it much easier for the final legislation to pass both chambers.
