Population data protector. Smith is in charge of managing the Census Bureau’s vast trove of data and making sure personal information is kept secure during the 2020 decennial census, which promises to be the highest-tech population count ever. To ensure confidence in the privacy of people’s responses and encourage participation, Smith worked across multiple agencies to establish a trusted internet connection so that census responses will go directly to the cloud. He also created a high-performance data lake to enable real-time analysis on census information as it is collected.
