Martorana to take over as federal CIO

Clare Martorana, the CIO of the Office of Personnel Management, is starting March 10 as the federal CIO at the Office of Management and Budget, the White House announced Tuesday afternoon.

The news broke earlier in an all-staff email from acting OPM Director Kathleen McGettigan, which was obtained by FCW. 

McGettigan credited Martorana for leading "our OCIO team through critical IT initiatives," including "overseeing the technical transition" of the National Background Investigative Bureau to the Department of Defense.

Martorana came to OPM from the U.S. Digital Service. She worked on the Department of Veterans Affairs' digital modernization and was the team and product lead on the project. Before that, according to the White House announcement, Martorana was president at Everyday Health and senior vice president and general manager at WebMD.

OPM's Principal Deputy CIO Guy Cavallo will take over as acting CIO at the personnel agency.

Technology publication Fast Company was first with the news, and reported that Martorana will be the first openly lesbian federal CIO.
