Industry Day

SITS is part of the FAA's Next Generation (NextGen) Air Transportation System Implementation Plan. SITS will support automated threat detection and tracking, data correlation, National Airspace System (NAS) impact analysis of security or emergency actions, risk-based assessment, and other capabilities. NAS response to security risk assessments by partner agencies is intended to be accomplished in the same manner as for weather, Special Use Airspace (SUA) and Traffic Flow Restriction (TFR) assessments. SITS will also support integrated security restricted airspace development and sharing capabilities. These capabilities will be seamlessly integrated with air traffic management (ATM) and support defense, homeland security, disaster recovery and law enforcement operations. The capabilities will be scalable to meet required response and projected air traffic demand. SITS capabilities would be provided to select FAA users. It may be available in a customized form to interagency defense and homeland security partners (e.g., Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), etc.) through a secure network, which enables shared access to an aviation security Common Operational Picture (COP) or, at least, a User Defined Operational Picture (UDOP) drawing on a common data set. SITS will facilitate real-time collaboration on monitoring, vetting, and operational response as well as coordinated consequence management. Highlights of the SITS Industry Day include: • FAA’s Airspace Security Role • Overview of the SITS Program • The envisioned SITS functions • Next Steps
